Description
Started by Abraham Case in 1622 ‘Buttony’ became a major cottage industry in the Shaftesbury area of Dorset. Entire families, including children, were involved from making the metal rings, buttoning and packaging.
The industry flourished until 1850 when, with the advent of machinery thousands of people were plunged into poverty, many having to emigrate to find work.
Letton Buttony is based in Blandford Forum and produces a variety of items based around the Dorset Button.
